Your church greeters can make a great first impression or an awkward first impression.
Like this church greeter:
As we approached the front door of a church we visited, the church greeter raised both her arms into the air to emphazie her joy.
She was REALLY happy to be serving.
Then, she grabbed my wife’s head and planted a big ol’ kiss on the cheek.
She then made a somewhat loud declaration:
“It’s so great to be with God’s people today.”
That was weird, and completely unexpected.
It won’t drive us away, but that greeter was a little over the top.
Unintentional Barriers
Here is a similar tweet:
Nothing quite ruins my Sunday church experience like the 65 year old greeter who tries to mouth kiss me every time I go.
Church greeters can create really awkward moments:
- Invasion of personal space
- Grooming Habits
- Grumpy Frowns
- Lack of Eye Contact
New church greeters can be
- Nervous
- A little intimidated
- Not sure how to respond
- Not sure what to say or how to talk to a complete stranger.
It doesn’t have to be this way.

Thanks, it has been refreshing and encouraging
I truly enjoyed this training and I now know my shortfalls as a greeter.
Thank you, Very informative
Thanks Chris! Appreciate the thought you put into this! Gave me a couple of new ways to communicate the vision!
Thank you very much….helpful re: small talk and reminder of boundaries, etc.
Good info…thanks for the webinar
It was helpful. Obviously somewhat limited in scope but a good refresher. Plan to send the link to our entire team.
Very useful. Thanks
Thank you! Very informative! God Bless You!
I thought the session on Thursday night was very helpful for some of my welcoming committee folks – not that they haven’t heard all of that from me, but you know how parishioners hear things differently from “experts”.
Thanks for the training session. You did a great job talking about a subject that does have great importance in helping welcome people to a new church….It helped me evaluate the way I greet newcomers and gave me food for thought.
I enjoyed the webinar. I have read lots of your material and am developing a file of material on assimilation. A lot of the material in your webinar I had of course already read since it was addressing new greeters. Several of my assimilation team members viewed it and thought it was really good. I look forward to more advanced information in the future.

I enjoyed the Webinar very much and feel charged up, excited and ready to go this Fall. This is the second Webinar I took from Pastor Chris and I will continue to take them as he makes them available.
I’m also going to be purchasing his written materials as I’m sure they will be useful as we grow our Hospitality Ministry.
Thank you so much Pastor Chris, the telecast was excellent. You’ve given me alot of information to use in my training of new greeters.
The webinar last night was a good “review” for me. I have studied your works and that of others in the past, so it was more of a review for me, but that was good.
Thank you, Chris, for the seminar. It was definitely worth my time. I appreciated the advance notes. You covered the topic well.

It was very informative. I liked having the study sheets, too.
This is not industry. This is a ministry. I appreciated your emphasis on this fact. I liked your presentation; I took notes which will help me in working with our greeter ministry.
Thank you for sharing your compassion, experiences and wisdom with us! I have the desire to make our visitors feel loved, comfortable and equally a part of our worship so I welcome all the help I can receive.
You always present your material in a way I can comprehend and “user friendly”.

I really appreciated the emphasis on greeting being a ministry, not just being friendly. Thank you for sharing your experiences and what you have learned in the years you have been involved in greeting ministries at churches.
